The Window Replacement Timeline, Start to Finish

Tier One Custom Windows · Austin, Texas

Window replacement runs in five stages: a discovery conversation, an on-site measurement and quote, the product order, installation, and a final walkthrough. The longest stage by a wide margin is the product order, because replacement windows are manufactured to your measured openings rather than pulled off a shelf.

The question most people actually want answered is how long their house will be torn up, and the answer is that installation is the shortest part of the process, not the longest.

Stage 1: the discovery conversation

The first conversation establishes what problem you are solving. Energy performance, noise, security, operation and appearance lead to different specifications, and a quote written without knowing which one matters to you is a guess.

This stage costs nothing and carries no obligation, and it can happen over the phone. It is also where a budget range and a rough timeline get set, which is useful before anyone visits.

Stage 2: the on-site consultation and quote

Someone has to measure, and it has to be on site. Replacement windows are built to the opening, so measurements determine what gets ordered, and a mistake here surfaces weeks later when a unit arrives at the wrong size.

The visit covers more than numbers. It establishes the condition of the existing frames and sills, whether there is rot or water damage behind the trim, how the exterior finish is detailed, and whether any opening needs structural attention. Those findings change the scope, which is why a firm quote follows the visit rather than preceding it.

Expect a specification you can check. Texas compliance guidance requires that fenestration U-factor and SHGC be determined from an NFRC label on the product, so the quote should name the product and its ratings rather than describing it as energy efficient.

This is also where financing gets discussed if it is relevant. We work with GreenSky, which offers pre-approval without a credit check and carries no early payoff penalty.

Stage 3: the product order

This is the long stage. Windows are manufactured after the order is confirmed, and the clock starts at confirmation rather than at the quote, which is why delaying a decision delays the install date by the same amount.

Three things extend it. Custom shapes and sizes take longer than standard ones. Specialty glazing packages take longer than common ones. And large-format systems are the longest of all, since they are engineered rather than configured.

Nothing happens at your house during this stage, which is the part people find reassuring once they understand the sequence. Your house is normal until the install date.

Stage 4: installation

Installation is measured in days for most homes, not weeks. The crew works opening by opening, and an opening is typically removed and the new unit installed and sealed the same day, so you do not have a hole in your wall overnight.

What extends installation is everything that is not the window. Rot repair at a sill, reframing an opening that is out of square, or exterior masonry and finish work all add time, and most of it is discovered at stage 2 rather than on the day.

Permits can affect scheduling. Austin requires a building permit to enlarge, alter, repair, improve or convert a structure within its zoning jurisdiction, while narrowly exempting work like replacing doors of the same size and operation. A straight like-for-like window replacement and a job that alters the opening are different propositions administratively, and our service area spans a dozen jurisdictions with their own processes.

One thing worth asking any installer: who does the work around the opening. We handle reframing, drywall, paint, siding, brick, stone and stucco work in-house, which means the finish work does not wait on a separate trade's schedule after the windows are in.

Stage 5: the walkthrough

The last stage is an inspection with you present. Every window gets operated, locked and unlocked, the seals and exterior finish get checked, and the warranty and any maintenance get explained.

Do this properly and do not rush it. Operate every window yourself rather than watching someone else do it, and raise anything that feels wrong while the crew is still on site.

What actually determines how long the whole thing takes?

Three things, in order: how quickly the specification gets decided, the manufacturing lead time for what you chose, and whether the openings need work beyond the window. The first is yours to control, the second is set by the product, and the third is discovered at the site visit.

If you want a specific timeline for your house rather than a general one, that comes out of the on-site visit, because the scope is what sets the schedule.
